Keto Diet

Updated: Oct 10, 2021

Keto is the new fad diet. Keto is a short term diet that can be incorporated into your daily routine to help you lose weight. It's suggested to be used as a short term diet because it's a high-fat and high-protein diet. If your like me, you've heard of the diet and may know of some people on it but still don't know if it's the diet for you.

Let me start by explaining what Keto is. Keto is short for Ketogenic. “Ketogenic” is a term for a low-carb diet. The idea is for you to get more calories from protein and fat and less from carbohydrates. You cut back most on the carbs that are easy to digest, like sugar, soda, pastries, and white bread that also have no nutritional value (Read earlier blog called "Empty Calories"). The diet aims to force the body into using fat (keytones) for energy instead of carbohydrates (glucose). Once the body is using fat and not carbs to burn energy it will produce keytones which the body will now use as fuel. This is called the state of "ketosis." When you eat less than 50 grams of carbs a day, your body eventually runs out of fuel (blood sugar) it can use quickly. This typically takes 3 to 4 days. Then you’ll start to break down protein and fat for energy, which can make you lose weight.

One of the reasons that the keto diet has been successful is because it takes more calories to turn "fat" into energy than it does for it to turn "carbs" into energy. Since, the body is working harder most people lose more in the first 3 to 6 months than with other diets.

It sounds like a great diet....so why should it only be used for short-term use and not a life style change? Simply because it is a high fat and high proetein diet with very little fruits and vegetables that your body needs. Fruits and vegetables can be high in carbohydrates but they also have fiber and other nutrients that the body needs for digestion. Plus, all that fat is not good for you either. I could see you developing high cholesterol quickly if you remained on this diet for too long. The only other downside I see that people have experienced that I know who tried the diet is what they call "keto-flu." Keto-flu happens when your body is carving sugar. When you go from a high carb diet to a low carb- high fat diet the body is bond to go through changes. The changes that occur in the body can lead to symptoms such as: nausea, vomitting, diarrhea, headaches, irrability, weakness, muscle cramps, dizziness, poor concentration, stomach pain, muscle soreness, difficulty sleeping and sugar cravings.

Keto for a short term diet can be very effective and help you lose weight. As always please consult with your doctor before starting any new diet regimens. Especially, if you are a type 1 diabetic. Diabetic Ketoacidosis is a very serious complication for you. So, again, make sure to consult your doctor before starting keto. Below I have listed a few recipes to help you along your weight loss journey. Be safe and Stay informed.
